Trend Feature: Crop Tops

I’m sure that a lot of you flinched at the title of the post as I know even the idea of revealing the midriff area for most women is unimaginable. But I assure you, the crop trend embodies much more than that. Immediately, crop tops conjure horrid images of Christina Aguilera or Brittany Spears in the 90s with ill-fitting high-waist jeans and a bandeau (pictured below) but the trend made its way back over the passed year, elegantly reformed with the passed forgotten. And now with 2014, around the corner, the latest set of crop tops on the runways are graceful, refined and here to stay.

The fashion industry was definitely not on top of its game in this decade.

Crop Top/High Waist:

The trend has evolved and become more modest and sophisticated in its presentation, which goes hand-in-hand with the revival of the high-waist trend. As the hem of tops move north, so do the hems of pants and skirts; inventing a new silhouette for women and highlighting different areas of the body. The high-waist- crop-top combination is one of my favourites this season and highlights my waist and hides my hips.

Naeem Khan Spring/Summer 2014- the completely modest crop.

Alice & Olivia Resort 2014- showing a sliver of skin.

This is the newest way to wear a crop top which I have already employed twice this week! This trend lends shape and layers to an outfit and can re-invent an old top or dress. When worn strategically, this technique can really lengthen the legs and body.

I employed the trend in my Personal Style Feature ( to really lengthen my legs as well as reinvent a dress which was ready to be shelved.

Les Copains Spring 2014- gives new meaning to a plain white blouse and basic skirt.

The all-out crop:

The last category is the most daring and for those who have been blessed (or have worked for) a bare-able midriff. This one shows the most skin and should be avoided in the winter-months. The all-out cropped look was rampant on the runways for 2014; so women, join me in my 100-crunches a night quest!

Street Style Milan Fashion Week 2014- finally gives women who sweat-it-out at the gym a reason to bare!

Theysken’s Theory 2014- alert: flawless mid-section and/or oodles of confidence required!!

That sums-up the crop-top trend. Get creative and experimental; this look has an amazing amount of versatility!

Be Inspired.
